The first course is made of three layers of slate. The first and second layers of slate, cut to 4 inches and 10-1/2 inches respectively, are bedded with silicone and nailed even with the drip edge. The third layer is full-length slates. For a hip roof, the full-length slate is notched around the wood strips that provide nailing for the saddle caps.
