Mitered "Fantail" Hip In a "Mitered Hip" the field slate and the hip slate are in the same plane. Ideally, the slates which form the hip are carefully mitered to produce a tightly fitting joint and step-flashed with each course. One variation of the straight mitered hip is the "Fantail" hip which is achieved by clipping the lower corner where the hips meet. With thicker slate, such as that used on this project, it is difficult to cut slate to a crisp point, making the Fantail a particularly desirable option.
