Due to all of the variables involved (size, color, thickness, quantity, etc.) roofing slate is typically priced on a project-by-project basis. Each job is unique and being a natural product, each batch of slate is unique. Because of its custom nature, it is rare to find a price list for all colors and sizes. Prices fluctuate depending on what is in stock, how long it might take to make an order due to backlog or difficulties in a certain quarry. For these reasons pricing slate is a two-way dialog. We will always quote exactly what the customer is asking for, but we also offer other options that might be a slightly different size or color but come at a better price or lead-time. Through this discussion we can work with you to find the best possible combination of price, lead time and slate type, all the while meeting the design requirements and keeping the job on time and on budget.
Slate is generally sold on a per square basis but per piece pricing is quoted for very small orders. The factors that affect the price of roofing slates are:
- Color - Unfading slates are more expensive than weathering or fading slates
- Size - Larger slates are more expensive than smaller slates
- Thickness - Thicker slates are more expensive than thinner slates
- Widths - Sometimes orders using multiple widths (randoms) is less expensive than orders specifying only one width but this depends on the quarry and the level of demand and inventory.
- Quantity - Larger orders generally result in lower prices.
- Texture - Standard (smooth texture) slates are generally more expensive than textured slates.
- Schedule - Last minute orders may result in higher prices.
- Flexibility - Willingness to consider options in any of the above characteristics generally means better pricing and better availability.
When requesting a quote on roofing slate use the criteria above to identify the types of slate(s) you are seeking- the more information you can provide to us, the more accurately we can quote you. If you are flexible in the size or color of slate, tell us and we’ll work to offer you several options in the range of material that appeals to you. Naturally, we are happy to discuss any of these specifications with you and we are willing to send samples of our slates if desired.
